# Paper A: Technological Constraints as Creative Factors
## Abstract
This paper examines how technological limitations of early 1990s interactive media can function not merely as technical restrictions, but as productive creative and dramatic instruments. Through a practice-based case study — the development of the hybrid interactive project *Archive KVANT 1993* (a real-time raycasting engine combined with FMV-style narrative sequences) — the author demonstrates how constraints such as low internal resolution (320×200), software rendering, absence of texture mapping at the initial stage, and limited memory can be consciously employed to shape player agency, narrative focus, and aesthetic atmosphere.
## Theoretical Framework: Constraint → Affordance Matrix
| Constraint | Affordance (Norman / Gaver) | Signifier in play | Dramatic / narrative effect |
|------------|----------------------------|-------------------|----------------------------|
| **320×200 internal resolution** | Affords reading silhouette and vertical rhythm, not photoreal detail | Visible pixel columns, <code>INTERNAL_WIDTH/HEIGHT</code> | 1992–93 laboratory atmosphere; anti-spectacle focus on mood |
| **COLOR vs TEX render mode** | COLOR affords spatial navigation and movement agency; TEX affords material curiosity | F1, HUD <code>MODE:TEX|COLOR</code> | Redirects perceptual labour from spectacle to atmosphere |
| **Distance fog** (<code>g_fogStart</code> / <code>g_fogEnd</code>) | Affords depth, threshold anxiety, and "hidden beyond corner" | Brightness gradient on walls; F2 <code>FOG+/-</code> | Archive dread, isolation, dramaturgy of incomplete spatial knowledge |
| **Software DDA / vertical columns** | Affords corridor thinking and orthogonal paths | Turn rhythm in <code>renderFrame</code> | Early-3D materiality; bridge to spatial montage |
## Controlled Comparison of Four Render States
1. **TEX + FOG**: Material surfaces + archival depth
2. **TEX**: Materials without "archive dread"
3. **COLOR + FOG**: Geometry + withheld distance
4. **COLOR**: Abstract navigation / prototype clarity
